Wrecks and Reefs is the itinerary for any diver wanting to see the best of the Northern Red Sea. If you cannot decide which of the spectacular northern resorts to visit, why not take a trip to the best of both worlds. Reaching out from the shores of Sharm el Sheikh and venturing almost as far as Hurghada’s coastline, the Wrecks and Reefs itinerary gets to some of the most iconic dive sites Egypt has to offer, as well a few of lesser known beauties.
After the check dive, this tour starts in style. Tiran and Ras Mohammed are rightly two of the best known areas for diving in the Northern Red Sea. Be it on Jackson, Woodhouse, Thomas or Gordon, diving in Tiran stands out for its lush coral gardens, sweeping drift dives and large gorgonian formations. The deep walls of Tiran mirror the startling drop offs of Ras Mohammed. This is where the Sinai stops and the adventure begins. Cruising past Shark and Yolanda, Wrecks and Reefs takes in the Alternatives, Small Crack and Bluff Point before moving onto the wrecks. The Northern Red Sea is a wreck diver’s delight. The almighty Thistlegorm is the setting for unforgettable diving, day or night. The Kingston, Dunraven, Abu Nuhas and Rosalie Moller only add to the excitement.
Be it on wreck or reef, the Northern Red Sea is teaming with the unique ecology that makes the region truly world class. The gentle sloping coral gardens play host to hundreds and thousands of candy coloured fish. 19th and 20th century wrecks have, over the course of time, formed artificial reefs. Surgeon fish dart through port holes while glass fish swarm idly by. Macro life is abundant and cleaning stations pulse with the day’s traffic. Blue spotted sting rays, eagle rays and manta abound and the summer months see large pelagic sharks gather on the drop off. Hammerheads, Black Tips, leopard and even tiger sharks all visit the region.
Wrecks and Reefs is the ideal itinerary whatever your experience level. A popular route for those new to the Red Sea, the varied depths across dive sites suit all abilities – from novice to tekkie. Visibility is crystal clear and the warm blue waters are perfect for even the longest dive times. Water temperatures typically range between 20 and 28 degrees throughout the year. Diving can be accessed whatever the season, either by boat or RIB. Currents push nutrients rich water from north to south, giving you plenty of opportunity for exhilarating drift dives. Travel times between dive sites are short leaving more time for relaxing.
Endlessly flexible, Wreck and Reefs has become a classic route. And yet no two trips are ever the same. The route can be adapted easily to ensure you visit the right dive sites… at any time of the year. The underwater scenery is ever changing and guaranteed to leave you breathless. Few other dive destinations can offer the same quality and quantity of top dive sites. Above the water line, islands dot a glassy blue horizon. Whirlwind to Brothers / Northern Wreck Special 7th March 2010 £995 Full

Whirlwind takes pride of place at the front of the award winning Tornado Marine Fleet. She is the result of many years working with divers and it shows. The approach is professional and the quality is unsurpassed. Launched in May 2006, Whirlwind certainly knows how to make a great first impression.
The signature design with split level dining room and saloon optimises the already generous space on board this 36m vessel. Light and airy, all 10 cabins are twin beds, en-suite with air con and have a safe box. The saloon area is ample with welcoming sofas, tables, plasma screen, DVD, a multi channel sound system, juice and hot drink station and of course the popular bar. The expansive upper sundeck runs almost the entire length of the boat whilst the lower sundeck is a perfect spot to sit back in and relax. Whirlwind is fully enabled for Rebreather diving.
The Wrecks and Reefs itinerary is ideal for anyone new to the Red Sea. This itinerary hits all the key spots in the North, and then some. The Get Wrecked itinerary is the best way to visit the full volume of 19th and 20th C wrecks including Thistlegorm and Abu Nuhas. For a trip with broader scope, try a Brothers Wrecks Special that fits in Abu Nuhas, the Brothers, Safaga, Gubal and Thistlegorm. Whirlwind stands out from the crowd on any reef and the dedicated team know how to ensure that no aspect of your trip, no matter how small, goes unattended.
The Brothers Wreck Special takes wreck diving in the Northern Red Sea further. Wide ranging, this itinerary mixes up northern and southern destinations. Each iconic wreck follows another… the Thistlegorm one day… Numidia the next. What more could any diver want? The Brothers Wreck Special really does combine unmissable wrecks and astounding diving.
Check dive over, the week typically kicks off at Abu Nuhas. And yet, as enticing as the Carnatic or Giannis D may be, more awaits further south. Set sail on a bearing for the Big Brother, where the Aida and Numidia met their watery ends. Renowned for pelagic encounters, the Brothers set the stage for awesome diving. Enjoy the calming isolation of these two tiny pin pricks of land amid a horizon of blue. The Salem Express and El Mina then follow. Returning to the North lie the Barge, Rosalie Moller and of course, the Thistlegorm. The Dunraven is the final stop in a week long wreck divers dream. The Brothers Wreck Special serves up an itinerary of wreck diving that cannot fail to lure you beneath the waves.
The differences in each wreck could not be more marked. The simple delights of the 19th century Carnatic and Dunraven are all too evident. Now very much a part of the reefs, the beauty of these dives speak for themselves. Hanging on the precipice of Big Brother, the Numidia is jaw dropping and a good place to look into the blue for big fish. The Second World War sisters, Thistlegorm and Rosalie Moller, both lie at anchor and are adorned with lion fish and snapper. And bringing the week into the modern age are El Mina and the tragic Salem Express. The first reef inhabitants have settled in to these new homes. Whilst the focus of this trip might be the wrecks in this area, the sheer splendour of the marine ecology makes it worth a second glance.
This itinerary is best suited to advanced divers. A minimum of 50 dives is required to the Brothers, which is remote. Sailing at night leaves more time for diving and enjoying the peaceful scenery during the day. The area can be subject to strong currents. Several of the wrecks make for excellent technical dives and the warm waters take the discomfort out of long bottom times. The fabulous visibility also makes this a great choice for photographers. The size and scale of the wrecks visited are impressive and worth more than a shot or two. Wide angle lenses are a must.
The Brothers Wreck Special is a remarkable route that visits a catalogue of veritable treasures and will interest anyone looking for a bit more drama in their diving. Over a week’s diving, the Red Sea’s shipping history is set before you for exploration. The Brothers Wreck Special is very much a journey through the ages, pausing at each moment in time. Touching the Southern Red Sea, this itinerary also gives the chance for to enjoy the sparkling reef life and opulent corals.

The Northern Atolls were surely shaped by the hand of a diver. The sheer volume of marine life in region makes this itinerary a great choice for photographers. The warm water and gin clear visibility means technical divers can enjoy total comfort with long bottom times. Local regulations limit diving to 30m. Grand Sea Serpent is fully equipped to cater to ever diver’s needs - be that as a recreational diver, photographer or technical diver. A Haskel pump on board enables gas mixes to be custom blended. Free nitrox is on offer to all nitrox divers.
Simply the Best is a rewarding itinerary with big fish a plenty. Daedalus Rocky and Zabagad are the pristine reefs of the Southern Marine Park whereas the St Johns itinerary gets right to the furthest corner of the Egyptian Red Sea. Grand Sea Serpent’s clever build makes light work of the travelling between dive sites, ensuring that you are in the best spots at the exact right time each day.
Simply the Best is exactly that – simply the best of the Southern Red Sea. The itinerary focuses on the reef systems of the Brothers and Daedalus, which together make up the Northern Marine Park. The Egyptian Marine Parks are protected areas and places of magnificent beauty underwater. Straddling Marsa Alam north and south, these two reef systems are beacons of light in the middle of the Red Sea and their lighthouses have warned passing ships throughout the years of the dangers that hide beneath the waves. Not far from the shores of Marsa Alam, Simply the Best closes with a dive at Elphinstone, a fine addition to your log book.
Check dive over, the Brothers is the first port of call. Sailing overnight means you can wake up to be where the action is. Little Brother is the stage for adrenaline fuelled shark diving, whilst Big Brother sports the highlights of the Numidia and Aida wrecks. Another overnight journey and you are whisked to Daedalus Reef. Daedalus is a huge triangular chunk of a reef, whose vertical drop offs rival the Brothers. Giant hard coral structures sprawl the walls. Currents pulse over a garden of splendid anemones, whose damsel residents dart between tentacles. Rounding off the week is Elphinstone reef, completing a trio of unparalleled wall dive destinations.
Simply the Best aims to hunt out the big fish. The Brothers is renowned for its shark encounters. Giant gorgonians grow at precarious angles from the wall and cornet fish follow divers, hunting in their shadows. At Daedalus, hammerheads school in the blue and individuals can also be seen visiting cleaning stations. They are often found around the northern tip, especially in the spring months. Thresher and grey reefs sharks skirt the edges of the southern plateau. Elphinstone has earned a reputation in recent years as the place to see oceanic white tips. Manta pass over the northern plateau, together with grey reef sharks. Barracuda, snapper and tuna are staple spots on all sites.
Simply the Best is an advanced itinerary and divers are required to have a minimum of 50 dives. The reefs descend to great depths and the warm waters suit technical divers. Night diving is prohibited in the Northern Marine Park. Drifting on currents, diving can be fast paced and an SMB is essential. Photographers are advised to to bring a wide angle lens, but macro life is also rich and plentiful. The Marine Park islands are remote and the lighthouse crews are always pleased to offer visitors a glass of hot tea.
Simply the Best lives up to its formidable reputation. Diving here can be unpredictable and you never know what is passing in the blue. Whale sharks are even seen in the warm spring months and dolphin often play. Underwater is a diver’s playground with simply the best walls the Southern Red Sea has to offer. An adventurous itinerary, why not undertake the journey to these remote locations and see for yourself just how great the reward is when you get there.
